Westran wins big at Schuyler, can now prepare for Homecoming

Westran won again last Friday night with a decisive 55-6 victory over Schuyler County in what almost looked like a Hornet tune-up game for the next six weeks. Five different Hornets would put points on the board and 16 of the teams defense players would combine for 43 tackles.
Quarterback Tyler Hunt would throw for 224-yards and run for 143 more. Bradley Minor would lead the defense this week throwing a Ram to the ground a dozen times in the game racking up 12 tackles.

The Hornets have a big game each week from here on out, playing class two Carrollton this week for homecoming, number one ranked Valle Catholic next week, and an LCC match each week after that until the regular season ends. That being the case, Westran head coach Curtis Jasper says that the idea of Schuyler County being a ‘tune-up’ game never entered their mind.
“We only focus on the task at hand. Doing anything else will get you into trouble every time and is disrespectful to your opponent”.
A message Jasper has preached since coming to Westran in 2007. This mentality helped the team win big on Friday as the Hornets would execute the game plan drawn up that week in practice perfectly, and not overlook the Rams at any point.
“They threw a lot of different defensive looks at us and brought a great deal of pressure in the form of blitzes”, Jasper said, “This opened up the pass game for us.”
Hunt would throw for a pair of touchdowns, one to Minor and one to Drake Buffington. Hunt and fellow senior Matt George would run the ball and grab a trio of scores each. Tyler Aulbur was also 7 for 8 on extra point attempts.
This week the Hornets return home to Huntsville to take on the class two Carrollton Trojans. Carrollton will be coming into the contest without a win on the year but it doesn’t necessarily reflect the ability of this team.
Jasper says that the combined record of the teams Carrollton has played so far is 12 and 4. Judging from this number, and the competition the Trojans have faced this year, it is safe to say they come into town battle tested and hungry for a win. Jasper also said that they have had a
case of the injury bug. This can be quite detrimental to any team.

As if taking on the Trojans wasn’t big enough, the game this Friday also the homecoming tag with it. This week at Westran will be filled with dress-up days, the annual bon fire, float building, parade, and the dance late Friday night. Jasper says that the Hornets are ‘focused’ and
it would seem not to distracted by the homecoming festivities.
