Westran girls drop game, boys pick it up

Kris Childs, Mirror sportswriter

The Westran boys and girls varsity squads traveled to Marceline Tuesday night for some Lewis and Clark Conference play.
Westran’s girls played the first game and it started out well. The Lady Hornets shut out Marceline through the first quarter and led 10-0. At half Westran still held a seven point lead at 16-9, and after three quarters 24-19. But in the fourth quarter the wheels came off. Marceline outscored Westran 18-11 in the final quarter to come back after trailing the entire game for the win 37-35.

In a losing effort Sam Gwinner had 21 points and 7 rebounds for Westran. Cerveny also had 5 points and 7 boards.
In the end, Westran just couldn’t hang on to the lead. After the game, Westran Coach Gary Dresback shared his thoughts.

“Defensively we played well, but as the game wore on we gave them too many opportunities to score,” said Dresback. “Many of those because we committed unforced errors and gave them too many extra possessions in the game where we didn’t get a shot on our possession.”
In the second game of this conference matchup Westran’s boys were hungry for a win. Westran trailed after one quarter 11-17 but pulled it to within one going into halftime at 25-24. In the third quarter Marceline added some distance and were up by seven. But in the fourth quarter Westran’s boys managed to make a comeback and get the win 60-57 after trailing the entire game.

Westran’s Tyler Aulber led the team with 31 points. Tyler Hunt had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Bryce Enyard also had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Westran is now 12-10 on the year 5-3 in conference. Marceline is 11-8 and 5-3 in conference.
