Going into Friday night’s game versus Carrollton, the Westran football team (4-0) had averaged a terrorizing 50.5 points per game and surrendered an intimidating average of 6 points per game through their first four contests. This being homecoming week the Hornets were especially focused on keeping their streak going.

Westran began the game with an uncharacteristically slow start offensively scoring 7 points in the first quarter after averaging 23 points in the first quarter this season. Despite the slow start, the first ten minutes had plenty of action. On Westran’s first possession of the game Matt George returned a punt for a touchdown that was called back on a holding penalty, Westran would eventually score on the drive via a 40 yard touchdown run by Kalob Dale. Later, as called by Westran Head Coach Curtis Jasper, the play of the game also came in the first quarter on Carrollton’s ensuing drive. Carrollton took the ball on their own twenty yard line and proceeded to drive down the field deep into Hornet territory and seemingly were on their way to making it a 7-7 ball game. The Trojans had the ball inside the ten yard line when Senior Matt George stripped the ball which was recovered by DB Drake Buffington to halt Carrollton’s march to the end zone.

Westran would score twice in the second quarter with the second touchdown coming with 0:13 seconds left in the half when quarterback Tyler Hunt scrambled for a 13-yard touchdown which was set up by a 33 yard reception by Drake Buffington that put the Hornets inside the red zone. The Hornets put up 14 more points in the third quarter from a touchdown reception by Tyler Aulber and another rushing trip to the end zone by Tyler Hunt who midway through the third quarter eclipsed 4,000 yards rushing for his high school career.

The Hornets would score once more in the game which came on the very first play in the fourth quarter when Tyler Hunt connected with Tyler Aulber down field for a 48 yard touchdown which enabled Westran to cruise easily to their fifth victory of the season in blowout style trouncing the Trojans 41-0 for the Hornets second shutout of the season.

Individually for Westran, quarterback Tyler Hunt led the team going 4-10 for 96 yards and 2 TD’s while scrambling for 167 yards on the ground and 3 TD’s. Kalob Dale rushed the ball 3 times for 52 yards and a touchdown while receiver Tyler Aulber caught 2 receptions for 63 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Westran Coach Curtis Jasper said after the game, “I thought that was our most complete game so far but obviously there’s always things you can improve on. First of all, to start off the game we jumped offside twice, they knew we are a blitzing team and they were trying to take our blitz away…We had a punt return for a touchdown called off because of a hold and those things are huge. That would have been a huge play but after that I feel like it was our most complete game. I thought we had a great week of preparation this week.”

Next week Westran faces its toughest competition yet in Valle Catholic (5-0) who is currently ranked 2nd in Missouri State Class 1 Football. Westran, also 5-0 is currently ranked 5th in Class 1 and will be a good test to see just how good either team really is especially with the game being played at a neutral site in Washington, MO. Coach Jasper also commented on the team’s upcoming game

“We haven’t let our kids look forward to this game because we had so many things we wanted them to accomplish along the way. And honestly it’s a game that doesn’t mean a whole lot, its not a conference game, its not a district game but it’s a great experience for our kids and obviously we want to go and play well. I’m not going to need an ounce of motivation for our kids because they are jacked up and we want to see how good we are and there is only one way to do that and that’s play the supposedly best team in the class.”
