Spartans remember Matt Rudder

By Nick Marshall
Last Friday night was the first home game for the Moberly Spartans and leading the team onto the field was the family of Matt Rudder.
Matt was killed in a car accident June 3 on his way to meet some friends after a morning of Spartan football camp.

Michael Rudder, Matt’s older brother, was named honorary team captain for the Spartan’s Friday as he and his family led the team onto the field. Cheerleaders wore number 49, Matt’s number, now retired, on their cheeks. A bench on which is engraved, “Gone but never forgotten, forever a Spartan” is placed on the field and players touch it in remembrance and honor as they pass it.

Everyone seemed to love Matt Rudder. Out of everything I was told about him, nothing was even remotely close to negative. Matt was a great overall person. Principal Aaron Vitt said, “Matt Rudder was a classy young man that could get along with anyone.” His friends believed that if there could ever be a perfect example of a student athlete, that person would be Matt.

Matt was the youngest out of all the kids. He always loved to challenge his one and only big brother Michael. He would try to beat Michael at arm wrestling and lose, but never gave up. He was very persistent on trying to push his body to it’s limit.

Matt sincerely loved football from the very beginning which was in 6th grade. Lifting weights and football became his passion in high school. Eventually Matt would challenge Michael to arm wrestling matches and win. He injured his shoulder during football season of his sophomore year. That didn’t keep him from being with the team though. Matt was at every practice and game cheering the Spartans on.

The summer before his junior year Matt injured his other shoulder and needed surgery. Even though he was not able to play his junior year either, Matt still stuck right there next to the team during the whole season. Matt was very determined to make his senior year the best it could be, but didn’t get the chance. Everyone that knew Matt Rudder will always greatly miss him, and the people that didn’t know him will always wish that they did.
