Spartans get first shut out in win over Fulton
Kris Childs - October 8, 2010Moberly coming off a convincing 47-6 win over Fulton in the week prior looked to continue their dominance over North Central Missouri Conference competition in week 6 taking on the Marshall Owls on the road. Moberly did just as they set out to do largely due to a second straight week of strong defensive play shutting out the Owls 23-0 improving the Spartan record to 4-2.
Moberly was able to cross the plane once in the first half on the ground to get things rolling for the Spartans. After being held in check offensively, punt return man Josh Cedillo was able to break free and return a punt 38 yards late in the second quarter which got Moberly close enough for kicker Ricky Webb to boot a 32-yard field goal and give the Spartans a 10-0 halftime lead.
Moberly came back out in the second half and managed to score two more times on the ground. Coupled with their dominate running game, Moberly’s defense and special teams bore down to complete the shutout for the Spartans which marked the first shutout win for Moberly’s football program in over 3 years.
With the running game working so well for Moberly only 16 passes were attempted with only 4 being completed for 37 yards. Rushing leader was Trevon Logan who carried the ball 27 times and totaled 216 yards on the ground. Moberly also had four more rushers who booked multiple carries in the game including Chris Ewens 5 carries 23 yards, Anthony Cedillo 5 carries 33 yards, Chase Roberts 3 carries 16 yards and Dakota Halley 5 carries 22 yards. Defensively for Moberly Anthony Cedillo forced a fumble and intercepted a pass, Josh Cedillo had an interception of his own while Bobby Johnson recovered the Cedillo fumble.
Moberly’s win brings the focus to next week’s competition powerhouse Boonville Pirates who also brings a 4-2 record into Friday night. Moberly has yet to fall in a conference game (2-0) as they will prepare to play host to yet another NCMC match-up.
