Moberly soccer loses district championship in last minutes
Kris Childs - May 28, 2010Moberly’s girls soccer team competed in their district championship game last Wednesday, May 19. The Spartans made it to the championship game by defeating Marshall 5-1 in the first round and then taking down Boonville 3-0 in the second round. But Moberly’s season would come to an end as they weren’t able to edge out Helias in the championship match.
Moberly and Helias seemed fairly evenly matched throughout the entire game with neither team able to score in the first half. Moberly broke the 0-0 tie but led only for a short time when Helias tied it up shortly after. You could say that the Lady Spartan’s season came to an end due to an eight minute span in the second half of Wednesdays game when Helias Catholic scored their two goals to take a 2-1 lead.
All through the abrupt lead change, Moberly played hard through the final whistle and even came within inches of tying the match. With about eight minutes to go Kelly Ross fought through the defenders and got a good shot off but missed barely as the ball bounced off the goal post. This would be Moberly’s last real chance to score in the game as Helias went on to win the match 2-1.
