Lady Hornets win first conference game

Last week the Westran Lady Hornets were on the road making a stop in Marceline for their first conference bout of the season.

Westran struck early in the first inning on a two run triple by Bree Cerveny. Marceline scored in each of the first three innings but the highlights of the game after three would be a three-run homer by Bree Cerveny in the top of the third and sophomore Shelby McCawley’s defensive play to end the bottom of the third. Shelby threw out a runner at home which would have been the tying run but instead preserved Westran’s 5-4 lead.

After six innings Westran was still clinging to a 6-5 lead but in the top of the seventh Westran senior Sadie Wilhite and freshman Bobbi Nejedley came up with clutch hits to put the game away for the young Lady Hornet team.

Westran Softball Coach Mark Harvey said after the game, “This was a hard fought game. It was our first conference game of the year and it was on the road. I thought our kids did a good job of staying focused for seven innings. Cassidy Edwards pitched a good game. She didn’t have her best stuff but battled hard and didn’t walk anyone. Everyone on the team contributed in a positive way. This is another step in the right direction for our program. I am very proud of our effort.”

Cassidy Edwards pitched a complete game for Westran giving up 6 runs on 14 hits while striking out 4 batters. Bobbi Nejedley went 2-4 with 2 doubles and scored 3 runs. Sadie Wilhite went 3-4, Bree Cerveny was 2-2 with a home run, a triple, 2 BB’s, 4 RBI’s, and 4 runs scored. Robin Ingabritson, Cassandra Brown and Sam Gwinner all had an RBI.
