Hornets improve to 15-3

The Westran Hornets improved their record to 15-3 when they defeated Atlanta High School 1-0 in a playoff type atmosphere last Thursday.

Westran Junior starting pitcher Tyler Hunt had something working for him Thursday when he was able to pitch a complete game 1 hitter in the non conference matchup at home. Tyler threw 7 innings, gave up 1 hit, struck out 16 and didn’t allow a walk on 89 total pitches.

Offense was sparse on both sides of the game with Westran only able to muster 4 total hits. You could have accused head coach Lance Massey of playing “whiteyball” Thursday referring back to Whitey Herzog’s “small ball” style of play he used in the ‘80s in St. Louis.

The only run of the game came in the bottom of the third when Westran second baseman Matt Werdehausen reached first base on a swinging bunt dribbler in the infield. During the next at-bat Matt stole second base to get himself into scoring position then Junior Matt George hit a ground ball to first which enabled Werdehausen to advance to third. In the next at-bat leadoff hitter Reggie Nute hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Werdenhausen.

Westran’s four hits came from Reggie Nute who went 1-2 with an RBI, Drake Buffington 1-2, Matt Werdehausen 1-2 R and Matt George 1-2.

Westran will put their 15-3 record up against La Plata Thursday at home for their last regular season game before Districts begin Saturday, May 15th in Salisbury.
