Higbee gears up for new baseball season

By Kris Childs

Higbee baseball season is about to begin and coming off of a successful fall season at 14-3 Higbee is going to try and keep the success rolling this spring.

The team has had two full weeks of practice to prepare for the teams first game this week. When asked about the main focus so far Higbee head coach Chris Sander said. “I’d say the thing that we need to work on would be fielding. I think that will be the point that will hold us down. I don’t think we’re real strong with that yet but that what we’ve been working on hopefully we’re going to get better with that.”

Coach Sander said the strength of his team is their pitching and hitting. “I think we’ve got a pretty good pitching staff especially with this size school. We’ve got a few good hitters that are going to apply a lot of power to our line up.”

Likely to take the mound the majority of the time this season will be junior Arthur Fuller and senior Travis Holtzclaw along with some help with Arthur’s twin brother Donnie.

Higbee looks to have a potent line up with the heart of the order full of .400 plus hitters from a year ago. Craig Dejan, Tyler Tucker, and Arthur Fuller will likely be the three that give their opponents the most trouble this year with their ability to reach base nearly half of the time.

Higbee’s biggest competition this year will be Sturgeon and Glasgow who are also advertising pretty good squads this year.

“They are going to be pretty tough to beat,” said Coach Sanders. “We played Sturgeon and lost by one in nine innings in the fall last season and we didn’t play Glasgow last fall.”

It should be a tight race for the district championship this season between these three teams. Higbee will play Westran at 4:30 pm.
