Cairo beats Bulldogs, loses to Panthers
Kris Childs - May 13, 2010The Cairo Bearcats had a tough time against the undefeated Salisbury Panthers last Friday as they fell 11-1 in six innings in a non-conference match up.
Salisbury scored 11 runs on 8 hits and committed no errors while Cairo was only able to produce 1 run on 3 hits which was a Seth Barratt solo home run that came with one out in the top of the first inning.
Ultimately the difference in this one was defense. Cairo’s defense committed 10 errors through the six innings and any coach will tell you that if you don’t have defense behind your pitcher it makes it hard to win ball games. Only two of the Panthers runs were earned 1 given up by Andrew Prather who started for the Bearcats. Andrew went 4 innings gave up 8 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits 2 walks and 2 strike outs. Andy Gravitt came on in relief to pitch 1.1 innings gave up 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.
Cairo who is now 8-7 will try and bounce back from the frustrating loss on Thursday when they play Bevier in a conference rivalry game at 5 p.m.
Cairo also traveled to Harrisburg last week to try and quiet the Bulldog’s potent lineup.
Cairo got on the board early in this one scoring 5 runs in the top of the first which was headlined by an Andrew Prather 3-run home run with one out in the inning. This would prove to be enough to seal the victory for Cairo as they went on to win 6-3.
Cairo’s Colby Dodd got the start for the Bearcats and pitched a good game scattering only 4 hits over 7 innings of work giving up 3 runs (2 earned) with 6 walks and 5 strikeouts.
At the plate for Cairo Aaron Barratt was 3-3, Seth Barratt went 2-3 with a run scored and an RBI, Brendan Rutherford 2-3 with a run scored, Colby Dodd was 2-4 with a double and an RBI.
Cairo’s Coach Schleicher commented, “This was a great win for us. We played very good defense behind Colby who did a nice job of pitching out of some situations with runners on base. Four guys had multi-hit games. It was an all-around, well played baseball game to get the W”.
