Bearcats bouce back from loss, win two
Kris Childs - September 27, 2010The Cairo Bearcats had started their season at a perfect 5-0 but ran into some trouble last week while facing the reining Class 1 State Champs the Sturgeon Bulldogs losing 4-0. Since their defeat the Bearcats have managed to bounce back and chalk up victories in their last two contests.
The first of the two games started out as a pitchers duel versus Madison. After four innings neither team had managed to break the 0-0 tie until in the fifth inning Cairo broke out to a 3-0 lead and added another in the sixth. The Panthers rallied in their half of the sixth for three runs of their own but ultimately were unable to mount a comeback victory as the Bearcats took the victory 4-3.
Colby Dodd took the victory for Cairo pitching a complete game surrendering 3 runs on 2 hits while striking out 12 Panthers. Aaron Barratt led the way offensively for Cairo going 2-4 with a 2-run HR in the fifth inning and an RBI single in the sixth. Craig Prather finished 2-2 with a run scored.
On Monday Cairo continued their winning ways with a bit more excitement versus Bevier by, at least for this game adopting a “merry-go-round” style of run scoring as they plated 26 runs en route to a 26-5 win.
Cairo scored in every inning of play Monday including 8 runs in the fifth and final frame. The Bearcats scored their 26 runs on 21 total hits and capitalized on 9 Bevier errors. Aaron Barratt earned the victory for Cairo pitching the first three innings giving up 3 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits while walking 4 batters and striking out 9. Brother Seth Barratt came on in relief pitching 2 innings giving up 1 run on 1 hit and also struck out 2. The offensive onslaught was lead by Seth Barratt who collected 4 hits with a triple scoring 3 runs and 2 RBI’s. Aaron Barratt, Luke Ancell, Andy Gravitt, Craig Prather and Jake Bragg all collected two hits for Cairo. This win improves Cairo’s record to 7-1 this fall.
