In the midst of the Moberly High School homecoming football game and crowning of homecoming royalty, there was a time of respect and reflection offered to former Moberly band instructor Bob Smith who died September 6.
A portrait of Smith was unveiled during Spartan halftime Friday night. The portrait will hang in the band room to provide inspiration to future students.
The following was read at the ceremony:
On Monday September 6th, Moberly and the music world lost a much loved and respected friend. Former Moberly schools band director, Robert M. Smith passed away. Mr Smith touched countless lives spanning generations and his contributions are immeasurable. Even after his retirement Mr. Smith continued to teach and serve students and schools in the area. Operating his music store in downtown Moberly, he was always ready and willing to offer his expertise and assistance. A frequent visitor to the Moberly, Renick and Cairo schools, Mr. Smith was a much trusted and valued clinician and mentor.Tonight, the Moberly band pays tribute to Mr. Smith and his family. Not many outside the profession realize the sacrifice of time, dedication and commitment necessary to achieve the successes and quality of performance that Mr. Smith attained. His wife Irlene, children Kevin, Mark, Michelle and Laura, and many grandchildren are here tonight to join us in honoring his memory. This picture of Mr. Smith, presented for the first time tonight, will forever hang in the band room where Mr. Smith began his tenure with the Moberly band program. The picture will serve to both remind us of the past and inspire us into the future. Retired director of Moberly bands, Mr. Paul Copenhaver, who was assistant to Mr Smith for many years, has returned tonight to lead the band in a selection appropriately titled, “A Song for Friends”.
This one’s for you, Bob.
