Huntsville reaches second step in bid for community center

Huntsville has entered the second stage in its vie for funds to build a community center.

Pepsi Refresh Project is offering funds to communities around the nation. Huntsville Mayor Frank Miller and his wife Jeannie have applied for a $250,000 grant to build a new community center.

During the month of May, supporters of the Huntsville Community Center went online at  www.refresheverything.com/huntsvillesportingactivities and voted for the project. The project was pitted against 319 other great ideas looking for the same money. But only the top two will win. If the Huntsville project could climb above the 100 mark by the end of May, it would get another month to make it to the top. Late Monday, the project hit 92, breathing new life into the contest.

The Millers are excited about the prospect of a community center in Huntsville. It would give the youth a place to go for sports as well as a facility to be rented out for events such as wedding receptions and reunions.

“A vote for this community center will affect more than the town of Huntsville,” commented Pam Fuemmeler. “The outlying community will also benefit.”

There is no charge to vote and nothing to buy. Just register and vote for the project. Information about the project is on the website (there is a typo regarding dropout rates, 65% is NOT accurate). Voters may vote once each day and must be at least 13 yeas of age. Proxy voting is not allowed in this second phase.

Keeping the children active in sports and school functions keeps them off the streets and promotes a more healthy group of children,” said Jennifer Hunt on the website. “This is definitely a win-win situation and would be greatly appreciated by all the Westran community. I think this is a wonderful idea.”
