Hunters can have fun while helping neighbors through Share the Harvest
Janet Morales - November 12, 2010If you enjoy spending time outdoors hunting Missouri’s whitetail deer, and also like to help the less fortunate in your community, Share the Harvest could use your help. Share the Harvest is a program that allows hunters to donate the deer they harvest to feed Missourians in need. The donated deer are ground into venison burger at participating deer processors. The venison is then distributed locally by charitable organizations.
This year hunters can donate whole deer free of charge in Randolph and Macon Counties. The Conservation Federation of Missouri along with local businesses and individuals have graciously donated money to cover the processing fee. In Randolph County, hunters can donate deer at Moberly Custom Meat Company located at 1515 W. Outer Road in Moberly. In Macon County, hunters can donate deer at Special D Meats located at the north end of Macon on Hwy 63.
Our goal in Randolph County is to have 300 deer donated to Share the Harvest this year. One whole deer will provide enough meat to feed approximately 20 families. Three hundred deer would provide about 12,000 pounds of red meat to Cherith Brook’s and Timber Lake Christian Church’s food pantries in Moberly.
As we all work together with Share the Harvest, this great partnership benefits Missouri in more than one way. People who are less fortunate receive much needed red meat for their dinner table and the deer herd is thinned, reducing problems with deer-vehicle accidents, crop damage and overpopulation. Thank you for any assistance that you can provide to allow us to keep this important program going.
