Spring: A reflection on the change of the seasons
Roy Morales - March 31, 2010By Roy Morales
Do you wonder why Spring seems to be such a hopeful time? Are we so ready for the end of the cold and snow, the frost on the windshields and frigid car seats, that we welcome the rain and mud of Spring?
Think about it, what is it about this time of the year that brings a smile to the average citizen of Randolph County? It may be that Easter is celebrated at this time. The hope that is in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The renewing of the branches, brush, and flowering bulbs, all giving one a sense of hope, a sense of renewal, a sense that for now, the bitter winds of winter are a fading memory.
All this can be summed up in the name April, from the Latin verb to open and the Hebrew noun for Spring. Hope may indeed spring eternal. Can you believe that just a few weeks ago we had snow everywhere? It seemed as if Winter had moved in from Minnesota to stay. Brrrrr. But now, now we see the greening of the lawns, the flitting of the small birds seeking nesting areas, even the cattle are beginning to lose their furry winter ruffs; as everywhere the land, the animals and even people prepare for the new growing season.
Now is the time to really think about those gardens and flower beds. Yes, there is much work to be had, but such rewards, the first sweet strawberry, the first gooseberry pie, the first vine ripe tomato, yes a new season is upon us. Let us look forward to Spring’s great gifts.
