Letter to the Editor

I want to thank the Westran Football team and the coaches for teaching me what the game REALLY means. I’ve never been a big football fan mostly because I never took the time to understand the game and to be honest I’ve always had my doubt about the need for high school sports, especially football. After this season of games, I can say that I am a proud fan of at least high school football and it’s all due to an amazing group of kids and some special coaches from Westran High School!

I started attending the games this season because my high schooler was in the band this year and would attend games in support of my child. As the season progressed and the team racked up victory after victory,(14-0) I found myself attending all the games. Driving two and three hours to watch the boys play football, Yelling and screaming in the stands rooting the team on. Watching these kids grow and pull together as a TEAM to accomplish something that is a first in Westran history was very educational for me. The boys spent all their time as a team working toward a huge goal.

For those of you who don’t follow High School football the team made it all the way to St. Louis to play for the state championship trophy at the “Dome” . The boys played that day at the “Dome” and fought a good battle only to end with a heart crushing loss by only one point in overtime. I am sad that they do not have a trophy for all their hard work. But they have a bigger prize that will follow them the rest of their lives. These boys have learned RESPECT, LOYALTY, TRUST, PRIDE, DETERMINATION, WILLPOWER, HOPE, FAITH, SPIRIT, DIGNITY and HUMILITY. Things that so often these days aren’t as important as they should be. This is something no one can ever take away from them. Thanks again to the amazing coaches, kids and parents for teaching ME. See you all next season in the stands.
