Walker tells MACC grads: never stop learning
Liz Morales - May 28, 2010“Real life. Real people. Real knowledge”. These were the opening words given by MACC President of the Board of Trustees, Rodney Loesch, at the 82nd MACC Commencement Ceremony on May 20th. A beautiful organ arrangement performed by Ron Self served as the processional as the college’s class of 2010 proceeded into the Activity Center.
Loesch went on to welcome the Class of 2010 and their friends and family members to the commencement ceremony. Words of encouragement and pride were given out to remind the graduates of how far they have all come.
In his address, Vice-President of the Board of Trustees, Greg Walker, told the students to make change a welcome guest in their lives. “Take on the concept of change,” Walker advised. ” Do this by transforming yourself into an information sponge. Never stop learning because the key to success in life and everything you do on a day to day basis is to never stop learning.” Walker went on to point out the three steps to becoming a well rounded learner, ” Observe what’s going on around you; ask questions, no matter how insignificant of irrelevant they may be; most importantly, always listen closely to the answer you are given to that question.”
It is agreed that the best way to improve yourself mentally and as a person is to ask questions. “You and only you are the only one who can make choices for yourself.” Walker adds. Walker also pointed out that high school is mandatory for all students. College is highly optional. Walker informed the graduates that they made a very wise decision by attending college when they did.
During the commencement ceremony, the class of 1960 was recognized. Thirty alumni received recognition for being members of the class of 1960.
Also, during the ceremony, eight scholarships and awards were given out to MACC 2010 graduates.
