MSSDAR names Hamilton Patriot of the Month

The members of the Armstrong Chapter of the DAR are pleased to honor Roy Dorris Hamilton of Moberly as their Patriot of the Month for September 2010.
Roy attended Searcy Elementary School near Hallsville, MO. In 1935, he was married to Doris Whitney of Espanola, N.M. and they had one son, who passed at age 7 in early 1943. Roy was drafted into the Naval Air Corp and left for boot camp in November 1943, at San Diego. From boot camp, he went to Camp Shoemaker, CA. and left from there to the different islands in the Pacific. One island he was on had headhunters on the island and they were instructed not to leave camp alone. Roy was a carpenter before entering the military and his job in the military was building storage buildings. Roy related the plane he was flown on to the different islands flew to Australia and picked up Bob Hope and his crew and brought them to the island Roy was on to entertain the troops. When Roy was discharged in December 1945, the troop ship came into Seattle, Washington. He had told his wife to buy a car and she did and met him in Seattle and they drove to St. Louis where he was discharged at the St. Louis Airport as a 2nd Class Petty Officer. He received the WW II Victory Medal.
After his military discharge, Roy worked in various states in the construction business. He was working in Las Cruces, N.M. where over 9,000 doors were hung and experimentation with the atomic bomb was being done. In the 1950’s, Roy settled in Moberly, MO where he owned the Hamilton Construction Co. and built a lot of homes before retiring in 1983. During this time, he attended evening classes at MACC studying blue-printing.
Roy and his wife, Doris, adopted a brother – 10 y/o and sister – 8 y/o. Their son passed at age 40 and Doris passed in 2000. He has 3 grandchildren. On June 11, 2004, Roy married Norma Ruth Hamilton, who was the widow of Roy’s cousin, and she had 3 sons with one being deceased and 7 grandchildren.
Roy is a member of North Park Baptist Church and the VFW.
