MACC sees continued growth
Liz Morales - June 25, 2010The Moberly Area Community College Board of Trustees received good news as they passed their working budget in regular session Monday night.
The report regarding summer enrollment showed an overall increase by 19 percent over last year. MACC President Dr. Evelyn Jorgenson reported that enrollment at the main campus has seen a “substantial” increase of 28 percent.
The board passed a preliminary budget proposal effective July 1.
“As in past years, additional revisions that cannot be determined at this time will be brought to the Board of Trustees during the college year,” said Dr. Jorgenson. “Also, as in past years, a complete revised budget proposal will be formally presented to the board of Trustees in a work session and at the regular February 2011 meeting.”
The board approved the Adult Education and Literacy budget proposal for fiscal year 2010-11.
The board approved the transferral of $1.4 million from the general fund to the general-facilities/plant fund designated for Hannibal ($1,000,000) and to an allied health Fund ($400,000). The allied health Fund would be used in 2010-12 in support of Governor Nixon’s “Caring for Missourians’ initiative.
The board approved the purchase and installation of computer furniture, task chairs and conference tables for the main campus library from “inside the LINES”, Columbia, in the amount of $32,034.
The board approved the purchase of auditorium stage lighting and installation in the amount of $51,571 from Nelson Audio Ltd., Eldon. The project will include new lighting boards, dimmers, controls and wiring for the stage lighting in the main building auditorium.
The board approved the purchase of a 2011 Ford Escape in the amount of $14,489, and a 2011 ford 12-passenger van in the amount of $22,845 from Moberly Motor Company. Trade-ins were accepted for the 2005 Chevrolet Uplander minivan and the 2000 Chevrolet Express van.
The board approved an Adobe two-year maintenance licensing renewal with Tiger Direct of Naperville, Ill in the amount of $16,718.
The board accepted a bid in the amount of $47,612 from Reason Computer of Burnsville, Minn. For 64 micro computers and 66 monitors. The hardware will replace or be in addition to student, faculty and staff computers and monitors in Moberly and Columbia. Jorgenson stated that the funding sources are Technology and DESE-Vocational enhancement Grant (pending vocational enhancement Grant funding approval expected by the end of June.)
Graduations and recognitions
Twenty-three law Enforcement Training Center (LETC) students sat for and passed the POST examination to receive a Missouri class A Peace officer’s license. One student in the class was under the age of 21 and was not eligible to sit for the POSt examination.
At the May 20 Associate Degree Nursing Pinning Ceremony, the academic and clinical excellence awards were announced. Patricia Coons of Macon was recognized for academic excellence. Nicole Shields of Columbia received the Missouri League of Nursing outstanding student of the year award.
Personnel
David Isgrig was appointed coordinator of workforce and business training programs. He has held the title Business and Industry Specialist since January 22, 2007.
Cheryl Shoemyer was appointed executive assistant to the president. With the recent transfer of Beth Krugh to another department and the full retirmeent of Shirley White, this position will be responsible for those combined responsibilities as well as supervision of two staff persons in support of the president’s office.
The following hirings were approved:
Katelyn Brandkamp, assistant director at the Columbia Higher Education Center. Alan Schriever, custodian/maintenance Columbia Higher Education Center; and Darlene Wyble, custodian/maintenance, Columbia Higher Education Center. The reemployment of patricia Twaddle, director of Career and Placement Services and Elaine Avery, part-time secretary/career specialist was approved as were the positions of mark chambers, Tech Prep Coordinator and Heather Gibler, secretary.
