MACC adjust handbook policies for upcoming year

A string of policy changes were announced during the Moberly Area Community College’s Board of Trustee meeting on May 24.

Also, the Memorandum of Agreement between Stephens College and Moberly Area Community College was formally approved. The agreement allows more classroom space for summer classes at MACC in Columbia. Dr. Evelyn Jorgenson, MACC president, reported, “by fall they’ll be in the new facility”.

A change in the attendance policy was approved. The revised policy states that any student who misses two consecutive weeks of class during a regular sixteen-week semester or the equivalent portion of class time during a shorter session will be dropped from the class by the instructor unless acceptable justification is presented. Another way a student can maintain a seat in the class if they have been reported absent for a considerable amount of time is if the professor can find a reasonable opportunity that the student can succeed in the class.

It was also announced that the College formed an agreement with the biomedical waste company, Stericycle. The previous disposal company the college has been using has been sold. The agreement provides disposal of medical waste, packaging materials and other items used in the MACC nursing labs. The cost of the disposal services will remain the same as with the previous contractor.

Briana M. McCartney of Kirksville High School was awarded the Elsie Busch Scholarship for the 2010-11 college year. The scholarship pays for full room and board, books, tuition and fees for a full time student at MACC. Alternate to this scholarship is Ryan Henderson of Shelby County High School.

Another change to the college is the Distance Learning Committee. The Distance Education Committee was formed in the spring of 2009. The committee played a key role in gaining approval of the online AA degree for students all around the state. Since the committee has continued to meet and make relevant and important recommendations regarding distance education programs, it has been decided that the Distance Education Committee be established as a permanent ongoing college committee.

Recently, the Articulation Agreement with the University of Missouri-Columbia has been accepted. This agreement provides students who have earned an Associate of Arts in Teaching, or an AAT, with an emphasis in Elementary Education the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at MU. The update no longer requires the minimum ACT requirement for the College of Education.

A bid from Christensen Construction Company in Columbia was accepted in the amount of $40,255 to repair asphalt to lot F and the lot directly behind the Activity Center.

The Student Art Show was held April 27 through May 20 in the Graphic Arts/Fine Arts Gallery of the Main Building. The classes themselves were the jurors for the show this year through anonymous voting. The award winning entries were as follows:

Best Painting, tie, Dani Becker and Jamy Lanham

Best Ceramic, Brad Koeven

Best Drawing, Brittany Ratcliff

Best Sculpture, Lisa Stegall

Best Black and White Photograpy, Julia Browning

Best Digital Photograpy, Brian Carmichael.

Marketing instructor Scott Taylor took three students to the International Career Development Conference in Louisville, Kentucky on April 17. At state level, Levi Mills finished third in Retail Management; Loni Truitt fourth in Marketing Management; and Brittani Williams, fourth in Human Resource Management, which qualified the three students to advance to the international level competition. At the four-day even in Louisville, each student was able to participate in various professional development academies and compete for international honors in the Competitive Events Program. Sadly, no student finished in the top five for international honors, but all the students received competent scores in their respective events.

In relation to this news, the MACC Marketing Department has been awarded silver, bronze, and merit awards in the 25th Annual Higher Education Marketing Awards. This contest is hosted by the Higher Education Marketing Report and is open to all college institutions across the nation.
