Columbia Community Band to perform Sunday
Submitted - March 10, 2010The Columbia Community Band [CCB] will present a concert this Sunday, March 14, at 4 p.m. in Columbia’s Memorial Baptist Church. The church is located at 1634 Paris Road in Columbia.
The program will include a number of concert band selections including Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine,” Delibes’ “March and Procession of Bacchus,” Brahms’ “Blessed are They [from ‘A German Requiem’], and Dimitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture.”
The concert will also include the premier performance of John Cheetham’s “Three of a Kind”—Suite for Band. Dr. Cheetham is an award winning, internationally known composer of music for various ensembles. He is Composer in Residence for the CCB, and plays euphonium with the band. Dr. Cheetham will conduct his composition on the program.
Guest soloist for Sunday’s concert will be alto saxophonist Jose A. Joyas-Caban. He will perform Clare Grundman’s “Concertante” [for Alto Saxophone and Band], an arrangement of melodies from Puccini’s opera, “Tosca,” and Sammy Nestico’s “Persuasion.” A Hickman High School graduate, Mr. Caban went on to study and holds degrees from Truman State University, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Indiana. He performs and teaches in Indiana, Missouri, and his native Puerto Rico. Additionally, he is a member of the award-winning Missouri Saxophone Quartet.
The Columbia Community Band is conducted by John G. Patterson of Columbia. Paul Copenhaver, Moberly, is the band’s Assistant Conductor.
There will be no admission charge, and the public is invited to attend.
