Huntsville Historical Society to present Hunt program
Submitted - May 6, 2010The Huntsville Historical Society will meet for a special program at 7:30 p.m., May 11, at the Huntsville Christian Church Fellowship Hall. Tom R. Van Sickle of Sedona, AZ will present the program on the early life of George Wiley Paul Hunt (1857-1912).
George W.P. Hunt was a Huntsville native who became the first elected governor of Arizona on February 14, 1912. He served out that term and was elected governor six more times. This program will cover his life from birth, leaving Huntsville as a young man until his first election as governor.
Tom R. Van Sickle is from Vernon County, Missouri and was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1958 and to the Kansas State Senate in 1960. In 1972, he was elected State Treasurer of Kansas. A 1966 graduate of Washburn University Law School, he practiced law in Fort Scott, Kansas until 1975 when he moved to Scottsdale, Arizona.
Van Sickle became interested in Gov. Hunt while taking an acting at Yavapai College in 2009.
Van Sickle plans to continue research into the life of Governor Hunt and later make this an in-character “Chautauqua”
