Huntsville groups raise money despite rain
Janet Morales - May 6, 2010Residents of Huntsville always look to the beginning of May as a way to clean out the house and make a few dollars doing it during the annual city-wide rummage sale. Many persons had these hopes dashed as rains poured on and off most of the day. However, a few members of some of the area’s organizations were out raising funds.
Dorinda Dameron offered lollipops to motorists who stopped to donate for the Randolph county Old Settlers which will be held this year September 9-11. A dinner is held each year honoring the long-time residents of the county. The three-day event also hosts the Miss Old Settlers pageant, a baby show, and a parade down Main Street. Anyone wishing to donate or volunteer can call Dameron at 660-273-2440.
The Huntsville Fire Auxiliary held a rummage sale in the protection of the Huntsville Community Center. This newly-formed organization works to support the local firefighters and goes into schools to teach about fire safety. The “not for women only” provides coffee and sandwiches when firefighters are on the scene of a fire and they help families clean up, move and to assess household needs so donations can be solicited.
The Huntsville Lions set up on the corner near the courthouse and sold fried fish even during the rain. Funds from this dinner will be used for scholarships, to send a student to Lions Band Camp and to purchase eyeglasses for the needy.
