Blasing teaches students not to be victims
Submitted - July 2, 2010“Refuse to be a Victim” was the topic of a seminar held Friday, June 25 at Merrell University.
Guy Blasing, representative for Communities Against Crime, talked to the students about taking responsibility for their own safety and how to become a survivor of a violent confrontation. The first step in any personal safety program, he said, is to recognize that you, too, could be a potential victim. He shared actual assault and abduction situations and then discussed methods individuals could use to prevent and/or avoid such assaults.
Some practical techniques were demonstrated with the assistance of Clare LeMaster, a Merrell University student. Since violent crimes are on the rise, according to Blasing, it is everyone’s responsibility to be prepared, not only when conducting one’s daily business, but in their homes as well.
The best defense is prevention. In your home you should always secure doors and windows, be alert to anything out of the ordinary and keep the area around our home well lighted. When shopping, park as close as possible, lock you car doors and be constantly aware of what’s going on around you.
Survival of violent confrontations depends upon being well informed and prepared.
